I’m New To Scrum

Woman walking down a road

I’ve never worked in tech, nor used scrum, but people tell me I’d make a good scrum master. Where should I start?

I get this question from time to time. In fact, I got it today. A good starting point is to read some short introductory articles and watch some videos. Here’s a collection that I recommend.

Scrum: A Breathtakingly Brief And Agile Introduction is the short intro book that I co-wrote. There is also a video on that page which covers all of scrum in about 13 minutes.

The Scrum Alliance is a non-profit organization that promotes scrum and helps to build community around scrum. Their What Is Scrum page has some good introductory material. They also published this series of short videos a few years ago.

Scrum is officially defined in The Scrum Guide. First published in 2009, the Scrum Guide has evolved over time. It defines the events, artifacts, roles/accountabilities, and values of scrum.

This fun video is a good overview of how agile approaches, such as scrum, work for software product development.

When you are ready to start meeting people who practice scrum, a good option is to hangout at my weekly online open office hour, and attend the other events we put on through The Scrum Professionals Meetup. There are also many other agile and scrum groups to be found on Meetup as well.

At some point, you’ll be wondering How do I get my first scrum master job? After reading that article, you might explore LinkedIn to find postings by companies hiring scrum masters as well as numerous articles and videos about scrum and the role of scrum master.

Done all that and you are still interested in learning more about scrum and taking the next big step to becoming a scrum master? It might be time to take our Certified Scrum Master workshop. The CSM is the most widely recognized agile credential and a good way to take your knowledge of scrum to the next level. A slightly smaller, and more affordable step is taking our Experience Scrum workshop. Either way, if you are a job seeker, you qualify for our special job-seeker discounts.

Good luck on your journey!

Chris
